Tasting Note
Crimson in colour with purple hues. Lifted aromas of savoury leather, red berries and charred oak. Palate is balanced and tight, displaying black cherry, chocolate and cedar flavours with an abundance of grippy coating tannins.
Winemaking
The wine spends 8-10 days on skins in open fermenters before being pressed into French oak barriques, about 20% being new barrels. It is matured for 8 months before fining, filtering and bottling. The wine has spent a year in bottle allowing the tannins and acid time to soften. We have found nebbiolo changes in bottle so differently to the Bordeaux varieties, and truly underlines the value in cellaring.
Vineyard notes
This is the second release of Nebbiolo under the Fermoy Estate label. A tiny crop of just over 4 tonnes from 1.2 hectares planted at Kelly's Vineyard, and 1 tonne from Jolliffe's, harvested with ripe intense flavours and good colour development. Nebbiolo is referred to as the 'pinot noir of Italy', not a comparison of flavours but rather the fickle nature of the variety.
Cellaring Notes
Can be cellared and enjoyed over the next five to ten years.
