Description
My standard set-up for Baroque violins is to fit a 363 mm fingerboard so that the High Baroque and even some Classical repertoire can easily be accommodated. Although the "authentic" Baroque fingerboard is shorter, there was an enormous variation of length during the 17th and 18th Centuries. The makers varied their fingerboards and often after purchase the player would have a longer one fitted ( ref: Il Manoscritto Liutario di G.A.Marchi, p. 99 ). Mostly it would seem that the Cremonese Masters defined the length on proportional and aesthetic grounds. For instance the relationship of fingerboard to body on the Medici Viola of 1690 by Stradivari appears to be 1:1.6, ie The Golden Mean.

Fingerboards and tailpieces are plain Ebony veneer unless requested otherwise. More decorative and indeed monogrammed fittings can be designed and quoted for according to the client's requirements.

The instruments are fitted with a Baroque bridge and an additional Classical bridge can be supplied if required.

Due to the extra work in constructing traditional laminated fingerboards and tailpieces for Baroque instruments from willow core with maple and ebony veneer, the prices are slightly higher than for modern instruments.
