Description
One day morning tea Brock asked "How do bees make honey?" His probing scientific question sparked an interesting group discussion about bees so we decided to study them and learn as much as we could along the way.

First, the children shared their ideas about bees. We collected information from resource books, read stories, studied diagrams and watched informative online videos. We learnt that bees collect nectar and pollen from flowers and take this back to a bee hive to make honey.

We connected our scientific investigation with art as the children painted pictures of bees and constructed their own bee hives using a variety of materials. The children measured lengths of yellow and black paper, to create stripes to fit the body of the bee as well as exploring the concepts of shape and patternmaking in their creations.

Brock and his friends came up with their own song about bees making honey called "I'm a bee." Demonstrating their emerging language and literacy development they wrote their own story "The Busy Bumblebee". The children painted their own illustrations for the story. These were collated together in a story book which was shared with their families.
