Birthmarks

Red superficial vascular birthmarks, called portwine stains or capillary malformations require specific vascular lasers. These include the Pulsed Dye laser, especially suited for babies and children, and the variable pulse KTP laser. The long pulse Nd:YAG laser is a recent development in the treatment of these lesions and is available at Ada.

Finally, broad band light device known as IPL may also be used in certainred/purple vascular birthmarks. The latest high power IPL has also been recently acquired by Ada.

Brown or black pigmented birthmarks eg Nevus of Ota, are most likely to respond to the Q switched Ruby laser or Nd:YAG laser. These lasers are also available at Ada.

Almost all birthmarks will require a few repeat treatments to either completely remove or significantly fade. The portwine stains are best treated as early as possible as they are more responsive in younger children.
