Description
While learning to dance you may hear dancers refer to Dancesport rather than Social or Ballroom Dancing. Dancesport is basically the name given to the competitive side of dance. There are three styles of Dancesport the same as for Social or Ballroom. That is Standard or Modern Ballroom, Latin American and New Vogue. In the competitive section dancers are separated into age groups to ensure fair competition:

Juvenile for the Under 13 year old dancers,

Junior for Under 16 years,

Youth for Under 19 years,

Adult for under 35 years,

Masters I for the older dancers over the age of 35, and

Masters II for the more mature aged dancers over the age of 50.

Grand Masters optionally included by many promoters to cater for the growing field of dancers over the age of 65 years who regularly compete in competition.

As you can see DanceSport is a sport for all ages and fitness levels.

Competitions, now generally referred to as Dancesport, range from world championships, to less advanced dancers at various proficiency levels. Most competitions are divided into professional and amateur, although there are special events for Pro Am competitions where a professional coach competes with an amateur student. The International Olympic Committee now recognizes competitive ballroom dance (DanceSport). It has recognized another body, the International DanceSport Federation (IDSF), as the sole representative body for DanceSport in the Olympic Games.
