Amalgam, also known as silver fillings has been successfully used in dental restorations for over 150 years. Although white fillings are the preferred option from an aesthetic perspective, there may be times when an amalgam filling is warranted due to its additional strength, location of the tooth needing repair and budget constraints.
Placement of amalgam fillings is a more efficient procedure requiring less preparation and time than white fillings, thereby reducing the number of appointments required. White fillings also require the tooth being restored to be completely dry to ensure a strong bond is achieved, this makes placement in teeth located very far back in the mouth difficult, as they are hard to isolate, a problem not experienced when using amalgam fillings.
