Cornel – sort of plants of family cornel. These are small listopadny trees or bushes up to 8 m high. Leaves are simple, extended, green, brilliant from above and lighter from below, with the rare pressed hairs. Flowers small, white, are collected in umbrella-shaped inflorescences, appear very much early. Cornel fruits – beautiful berries, bright red stone fruit of oval form with one or two seeds.
History and distribution
There is Christian legend that the cross, but which Christ has been crucified, has been made their cornel as only these trees were the biggest in Jerusalem. Since then flowers of cornel serve as reminder on cross, prickles represent nails which have beaten Christ, red stamens of flowers mean crown of thorns, and scarlet berries – Christ's blood …
People have long since begun to okulturivat cornel, still Virgil testified to it. In our country the cornel was tried to be acclimatized in the 17th century at the tsar Alexey Mikhaylovich. In the territory of the former USSR the cornel is widespread in the Caucasus, in Moldova, in Ukraine, preferring edges of the woods, hillsides, coast of the rivers, forming sometimes small thickets.
Structure and properties
The pulp of fruits of cornel contains sugar, organic acids, tannic, pectinaceous and nitrogenous substances, flavonoids, vitamins (With, P, A), essential oil, phytoncides, minerals. Stones of cornel contain up to 34% of greasy oil. In bark glycosides, tannins, organic acids are found. Leaves contain vitamins C and E.
The cornel is long since known to the person as remedy. In chronicles there are references that the people of the Caucasus cooked special flat cakes from berries of cornel and subjects prevented development of scurvy in military years. And it is not surprising, on the content of vitamin C the cornel exceeds even blackcurrant.
The cornel is applied at gastrointestinal diseases, gastritises, at disorders of intestines. Berries of cornel are useful at metabolic disorders, gout, skin diseases, they accelerate process of clarification of organism from metabolism products, promoting removal of uric and oxalic acid. Dried and fresh fruits of cornel are applied at flu, quinsy, rickets, measles and cold.
Broth from roots and bark helps at rheumatism and arthritis, and infusion from leaves possesses diuretic, zhelchegonny, astringent action.
Infusion of flowers, juice and infusion of fruits of cornel help with treatment of fever.
Berries of edible grades of cornel use fresh, and also prepare from them juice, syrups, compotes, kissels, jam, jam, wine, tinctures, liqueurs, fruit liqueurs. The cornel is also used as seasoning to fish and meat dishes, used in the form of marinades.
Wood of cornel is applied in production of shuttles to weaving looms, arrows, door handles and other small bagatelles. Besides, make sports equipment for occupations of cornel oriental martial arts.
