Liposculpture

Dr Stradwick believes that although liposuction is considered "easy" it is actually a complex procedure involving more than just removal of fat. In fact it is actually more an operation of the skin. The reaction of the skin is what determines the quality of the result rather than the amount of fat removed. Skin quality is critical to decision making in liposuction. In patients with excellent skin quality Dr Stradwick will perform superficial liposuction, a technique that produces significant tightening of the skin in addition to elimination of the fat deposit. However trying to do this in patients with less than ideal skin quality leads to unsightly skin irregularities. In such cases deeper liposuction is appropriate. This decision making process requires experience. When used correctly liposuction is a very powerful tool for changing body contour. The best candidates for liposuction are those with well defined deposits of fat and good to excellent skin quality. It should be emphasized that it is not a weight loss technique - it is a shaping or sculpting tool.

In secondary or revision cases Dr Stradwick will use a combination of liposuction and fat grafting to correct deformities. These deformities can result from poorly performed liposuction but also trauma or even defects from tumour excision. In such cases transferring fat from an area of excess to an area of deficiency can greatly improve the overall contour.
