Description
At Vision Dental we come across a lot of patients who are nervous or have a fear of the dentist, therefore avoid going. As a result of this, a persons dental and general health can suffer.

For this reason we provide a service called 'sleep dentistry' or what is also known as twilight sedation.

What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry is the use of intravenous or 'IV' sedation which is administered here in our surgery by a qualified anaesthetist. It is made of a combination of pain relieving and sedative drugs.

IV sedation is a very effective way of providing anxiety relief and pain control without having to have a general anaesthetic in the hospital. Twilight sedation may not be suitable for all patients. An assessment will be undertaken to determine suitability.

Sleep dentistry eliminates any awareness of a patients surroundings including smells, sights and sounds of drilling and injections which makes your visit to our surgery a more enjoyable experience.

What to expect

The anaesthetic is administered by our anaesthetist who is by your side the entire time monitoring you. While sedated, our patients feel calm, relaxed and are in a drowsy, dreamlike state for the duration of the appointment. This takes away any anxiety or fear a patient may have about having dental treatment, allowing nervous patients to get their dental care that is needed but have put off.

Patients come out of sedation feeling drowsy and relaxed with no recollection of anything. Recovery is usually rapid however, patients are advised to have someone to drive them home.

General anaesthetic

A general anaesthetic may be recommended in certain cases.

This can only be done in hospital by an anaesthetist as the patient is unconscious throughout the procedure and must be monitored closely. This is usually done as day surgery and does not require a patient to stay overnight.

The patient is totally unaware of treatment. This allows multiple procedures to be done quickly so may be a good option for very young or uncooperative children, or people with special needs.

Recovery normally takes longer with a general anaesthetic than with other forms of sedation.
